Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, largely known as BSNL is an Indian telecom brand which is operated by the government. Headquartered in New Delhi, this company was incorporated in 2000. Being an government brand, BSNL enjoys all the privileges and hence, it was the first brand in India to launch 3G.

Is BSNL 20 GB 3G data in Rs 50 a Hoax?

Largest state-owned telecom service provider BSNL reportedly launched a special promotion offer for all its users across India. BSNL is operating in 20 circles of India and has 3G network all across country.

BSNL is highly criticized for having a poor network in rural areas and slow network speed in congested city areas. But recently a news surfaced online on social media as well as print media that BSNL has launched new plan which gives 20 GB of whopping 3G data in just Rs 50. Not just the huge Data but news also claimed that one can share that data with 4 other people.

It took no time to get this viral but looks like there in no offer like that. Several BSNL authorities denied this and even said that this is someone trying to create hoax and destroy BSNL’s public image.

BSNL Self care

News claimed that customer needs to activate this from BSNL’s self care portal.  But the link of self-care which surfaced was of a Broadband portal. So there are high chances that no such offer exist.

We have drafted a mail to a senior authority in BSNL and waiting for revert. Lets hope for something good.

BSNL Broadband : In Depth Review

BSNL or Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limted is the biggest Wireline Broadband provider in the Country. According to the October stats of TRAI, BSNL has approx 10 million BB users across the country. However, both BSNL and MTNL are continuously loosing their customers.

But still there are many places where BSNL is the only choice if you want a Broadband connectivity. Is BSNL worth of money in such case? Here is the in depth review of BSNL Broadband from its 7 month old user.

I live in Jaipur, Rajasthan. My surroundings are well connected from Telecom technologies but not my colony. 7 months back when I was hunting for Broadband connection I found there is only BSNL BB available. With no option available, I applied for BSNL Broadband on my existing BSNL Landline connection. It took BSNL 3 days to finally  fix all the formalities and put the connection on. A guy came for Installation and since I was having ADSL modem of my own he made several extra ups and down to set up everything. With his testing modem connection was working fine but with my ASUS modem connection was not there. He asked me to replace the modem and went away.

At night I noticed that my Landline was not working too. Then I checked there was problem in setting up spliter. I corrected that and both Broadband and Landline started. With this initial incident I understood that you should not trust BSNL employees, most of them are DUMB!.

However I had opted for 4 Mbps plan and initially speedtest.net was showing speed of  3.70 Mbps which was Okay for me.

I faced not a single problem for 3 months but one day I found connection was down. After waiting 4 hours I contacted the nearest office and they said that its a problem from main station and will take time. It took 8 more hours but everything went fab then.

That was the only time when I faced the problem. And now lets talk about its speed and reliability.

Speed of the BSNL Broadband

I initially opted for 4 Mbps plan but soon jumped down to 2 Mbps as It was also good for me. I an allowed to use 8 GB with 2 Mbps speed and after that speed fall down to 512 Kbps. I tell you that speed is reliable and I get 200-250 kBps download everytime and 50-60 kBps upload speed. After 8 GB both download and upload speed come at same level and fluctuate around 50-55 kBps. I never faced any slow speed issue apart from one day that also just for 1 hour(I was getting 10 kBps that time :p).

Reliability of BSNL Broadband

Well according to my experience, you can relay of its connection. But BSNL is having a bad name out there, everywhere. So you should take following steps before taking a Broadband connection.

  • Visit at least two place where BSNL BB is working near you house.
  • Ask their experience and downtime of connection.
  • Meet the employees of the BSNL office, check if they look promising and able.
  • If you find anything wrong or the monthly downtime is more than 2 days, never ever go behind BSNL.

How to Increase speed after FUP?

In case you have used all the high speed data allotted to you and you want more High speed data then you have a option for it.

BSNL Broadband FUP

You will see the above shown window when speed will get slow. Click on Upgrade and proceed.

BSNL Broadband Top Up

Usually these 4 option will be there and you can proceed by selecting the desired one.

If you want to see the SpeedTest.net results of BSNL Broadband then watch the videos given below.

Will the mobile Internet speed increase now?

Recently TRAI asked all the telecom service provider of India to ensure some points related to their Internet speed. Now telecom companies will have to provide the details of the minimum speed which users will receive after recharging with a Data pack. Not only this the companies will have to make sure that they are delivering that minimum speed for at-least 80% of the time. A major question after this decision comes to mind, Will the Mobile Internet speed increase now?

This step of TRAI is welcomed here. Till now the companies were playing fair tricks with the Indian customers. Companies like Tata Docomo were saying that they deliver the internet speed of 21 Mbps. While some were saying they deliver 14.2 Mbps and all were at least promising the speed of 7.2 Mbps. This was the scenario for both Mobile Internet and Data Card internet. I bet no one ever got the speed of 21 Mbps on their mobile or Data card in India (except 4G which is just used by a few thousand in India).

MTS which is one of the leading telecom provider in Data card market promise the speed of 9.2 Mbps with their data card. I tested myself and got 10% of the actual speed, when made a complaint to them they said you are getting the speed of 1 Mbps and that’s okay. So what a common man do now? Sit back and throw out your frustration somewhere else.

Though TRAI made a great move, now companies will set a minimum speed and will give it for 80% of the time but who will track that 80% uptime or that 20% downtime?  Moreover it  would be great if TRAI would have also made any comment on the minimum speed limit like they did for wireline broadband a few days back (TRAI made 512 Kbps as the minimum speed for Wireline Broadband).

And talking about the Downtime, according to my experience BSNL is the ISP with the highest time of downtime with their mobile Internet. They are down for 80% of the time. They also have call drops problem over their 3G network.

Moreover companies can still play fair tricks. 70% of us do not know the difference between kBps and kbps or the difference between MBps and Mbps. Companies take it as a plus point the always show their speed in Mbps and kbps.  Let me tell you the difference, the Capital ‘B’ stands for Byte and the small ‘b’ stands for bit. There are 8 bits in one byte (1 Byte = 8 bits), which mean a speed of 8 Mbps is actually a speed of 1 MBps. Lets get more clear,  A song is usually of 5 MB (5 MegaByte) which we can download with 20-25 kBps speed of a 2G connection in 3-4 minutes. That 25 kBps speed actually mean 200 kbps for the companies. In the same way the 7.2 Mbps speed is actually less than 1 MBps.

Users need to be aware on such fair tricks. TRAI may take more steps for better internet but until consumer get aware, companies will keep playing such more tricks and cheat you.

World Consumer Rights Day special on Telecom by Team PlanDekho

15 March 2014.

Hello Readers,

Happy World Consumer Rights Day to you.

India is second largest country in world in terms of Population, One of the leading economy and a developing country. Trade and Industrialization shown a massive growth in last decade. For those who don’t know, India is second largest country in terms of telecom user population. Things here changed like never before in last decade. In the same last 10 Years Telecom Industry grown magnificently in the country just like the rest of Globe. Various telecom companies emerged out with hope to serve millions of Customers in India, some are doing so while rest are lost somewhere in the population of 125 cr.

Telecom is way of communication to long distance with technological means. But today our post will be limited to mobile telecom services of India. Altogether there are 12 fully active mobile service provider and many Boradband ISPs across India. There are more than 867 Million active customer of Wireless telecom service in India. Bharti Airtel is the leading telecom company with customer base of more than 188 Million.

Airtel is though noted as best customer satisfaction providing company but list of complains raised be Airtel customer is also more than 1000 in a single day. Condition is similar with all the telecom companies in India including the only state owned telecom company BSNL. Below here we will discuss the problems of Telecom Consumers and the way to get their solutions from the telecom companies.

Major and Minor Problems to customers of all telecom companies in India

Wrong Balance Deductions

One of the major problem discussed by customers of all the mobile companies in India. Wrong balance deductions are done in many forms like by cutting extra charge of your call. Sometimes customer complains the deductions of their main balance or Data without even use of the Internet.

Unwanted VAS activation

This problem is faced by almost all the customers. Telecom companies activate services and offers on customer mobile number without any request by the customer. Mainly these services are of no use like SMS alerts of Sport news, health tips etc. Condition is even worse for the customers when the number is switched off and the balance is deducted from the same.

Wrong Recharge Amount

This field is improved much but still cursed a lot since it wipes away a big amount. Many times companies change the recharge tariffs without any prior notice to the customers and when the customer recharge with previous amount he gets nothing and loose the money also.

With clever tricks

Companies play many clever tricks. many times they fool customer and the customer is not even aware of it. One of the technique is STV activation through SMS or USSD. A STV amount displayed by company always include the VATs over it. When we made a top-Up we are charged the VAT also. But with the Top-up amount when we activate an STV we are again asked to pay amount with VAT. Hence custome have to pay tax Twice. But company pay it only once to government.  BSNL customers are lucky as they are not fooled like this.

There are many more tricks through which a customer get financial loss and hence lead ti mental and physical loss. Below are the few tricks which one should take if cheated any how.

Solutions one can look upon

File a compliant

All the companies are giving toll free numbers to register a complaint. Ask customer care to solve the issue by explaining it the complete issue polity. If possible record the call.

In most of the cases your issue get solved, If not proceed to next step.

Awake them on Twitter and Facebook

If your issue in not solved or you want other customer to know them your issue, post or tweet your issue to the company’s FB or Twitter handle. Your voice will be surely listened.

Still in Problem? Proceed to further step.

Take your issue to nearest Customer outlet

If your issue is not solved go to the nearest customer outlet of your telecom provider and tell them to solve the issue or you will take a legal action.

Not satisfied yet!?! Dive in to next step.

Knock the door of Consumer Redressal Commission

Indian constitution is respectable. Constitution provide rights to customer to legally fight against frauds and unfair practices. Visit nearest Consumer court and file your complaint with all your docs. and evidences. This process is really easy and good. You will get proper justice.

Not only India, the problem of cheats with consumer is existing every where. This is the reason why theme of this World Consumer Rights Day is “Fix our Phone” or “Fair Mobile Service” . We have to shout loud to stop such evil practices otherwise no company gonna improve.
